Zelenskyy Calls for Enhanced Air Defense Following Energy Infrastructure Strikes.
Strengthening Mobile Air Defense Units Discussed
According to TSN.ua: Following a recent Russian aerial assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has held discussions on reinforcing mobile air defense fire teams. This urgent review was prompted by a large-scale missile and drone attack on February 7th, which primarily targeted critical substations and high-voltage power lines of 750 kV and 330 kV. These attacks are part of a sustained Russian campaign to cripple Ukraine's civilian power grid, especially during the harsh winter months.
The offensive was concentrated on western and central Ukrainian regions, specifically Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Rivne, and Vinnytsia oblasts. Ukrainian air force command reported tracking 447 aerial weapons during the operation, with air defense forces successfully intercepting or neutralizing 406 of these targets. The destroyed assets included:
- 24 missiles
- 382 drones
Zelenskyy stated that in the coming days, regional leaders, the Air Force, and the Ministry of Defense must ensure the additional strengthening of mobile fire groups within the overall defense system for specified regions. He also emphasized that Ukrainian diplomats must intensify their work with international partners to secure support packages for Ukrainian air defense and energy resilience. This underscores the critical need to bolster the nation's defensive capabilities in response to ongoing aggression.
Protecting Critical Energy Infrastructure
The focus on enhancing mobile air defense units highlights the severe and persistent threats Ukraine faces. Attacks on the energy grid represent a deliberate strategy by the aggressor to cause widespread disruption and hardship for civilians. Engaging international partners for support in both air defense and energy stability is therefore an essential step for ensuring Ukraine's security and operational continuity.
