Zelenskyy's Stance on Negotiations: Security Guarantees Must Precede Any Concessions.
Ukrainian Leadership Comments on Territorial Concessions
According to TSN.ua: In a recent interview, the Commander of Ukraine's National Guard, Oleksandr Pivnenko, stated that territorial concessions are currently impossible. He emphasized his forces' readiness to follow the orders of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, declaring,
"it is impossible at this time" and "no one will be giving up territories,"while affirming that "we are a country governed by law." These remarks underscore Ukraine's official position in the ongoing diplomatic talks.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has articulated a similar position, stressing that Ukraine must receive concrete security guarantees before discussing any political compromises. He clarified that
"a readiness for dialogue does not mean agreement to territorial concessions."These statements were made against the backdrop of negotiations held in Geneva on February 17-18. The conflict, now in its third year, has made the issue of sovereignty non-negotiable for Kyiv.
Negotiation Status and Kremlin Demands
As of now, the Kremlin is demanding full control over the Donetsk region and a formalized status for the occupied territories, which constitute approximately 20% of Ukraine. Meanwhile, the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly set a deadline of June 2026 for resolving these issues. President Zelenskyy is seeking security guarantees lasting 30 to 50 years, whereas the United States has so far proposed a term of only 15 years. According to Reuters agency reports,
- "the main obstacle remains the Kremlin's ultimatums"
- "progress in the talks is unlikely"
Consequently, the positions of Ukraine and Russia on territorial integrity remain irreconcilable, severely complicating the prospect of reaching a compromise in the current negotiations.
These declarations demonstrate that Ukraine remains steadfast in its principles regarding territorial sovereignty, even within the context of intense international diplomacy. The combination of Moscow's demands and the significant gap in proposed terms for security guarantees highlights the profound complexity of the situation and the current lack of common ground, which risks prolonging the conflict resolution process.
