Russia's Political Influence Over Armenia

According to UATV: As Armenia approaches its parliamentary elections, Moscow is once again attempting to steer the country's internal politics. These moves echo the 2013 events in Ukraine, when Russia pressured Kyiv to abandon its European integration path. Political analyst Igor Chalenko argues that the Kremlin's goal is to prevent the 'Civil Contract' party from retaining power after the vote.

Tools of Coercion

Among the pressure tactics employed by Russia are restrictions on Armenian imports—an economic lever that could significantly affect the domestic political landscape. Chalenko emphasizes that

“The Russian Federation is doing everything possible to keep the 'Civil Contract' party from forming a government.”

He also notes that 'Pashinyan holds a pro-peace stance,' which may run counter to Russian interests in the region.

In 2013, under President Viktor Yanukovych, Russia similarly tried to block Ukraine's moves toward the European Union. Armenia's situation could unfold in a comparable way, highlighting the need for close monitoring of political shifts in the region. The choice between the European Union and the CIS—once central for Ukraine—is now also relevant for Armenia as it heads into its upcoming elections.

This trajectory suggests that a scenario resembling Ukraine's past experience may repeat in Armenia's relations with Russia. The elections could prove pivotal not only for the country's domestic politics but also for its foreign policy, particularly regarding European integration. The developments in Armenia deserve close international attention, as they may affect stability across the entire region.
