Ukraine's Unique Drone Defense Expertise: A European Security Asset.
Meeting of Ukrainian and Romanian Presidents
According to UATV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Romanian President Nicolae Dan on March 12, 2023. Their joint press conference focused on military cooperation, with Zelenskyy highlighting Ukraine's unique experience in countering attack drones. He stressed that even nations with substantial missile stockpiles may find them insufficient for modern threats.
“Even when countries have large reserves of missiles, it may not be enough,” stated Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This meeting underscores the shifting nature of warfare in Eastern Europe, where asymmetric threats are becoming the norm.
The Economic Logic of Drone Warfare
Zelenskyy illustrated the cost disparity of modern weaponry, comparing expensive missiles priced at $3-4 million each to the $130,000-$150,000 cost of a Shahed drone. This stark contrast underscores the economic efficiency driving the use of drones in contemporary combat. He further noted that over 800 missiles were used in the Middle East within a 24-36 hour period.
“Our experience in combating Shahed drones is unique,” emphasized Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The planned cooperation includes a joint drone manufacturing initiative with Romania. Zelenskyy is also scheduled to hold talks with Romanian Prime Minister Ion-Marcel Bolojan. Additionally, the Ukrainian president will visit an F-16 pilot training center, marking another step in enhancing Ukraine's military capabilities and deepening defense collaboration between the two nations.
This summit highlights the critical importance of regional military cooperation in the face of growing threats from drones and other advanced weaponry. Joint drone production could help both Ukraine and Romania not only bolster their own defenses but also contribute to strengthening European security as a whole. Drawing on Ukraine's hard-won battlefield knowledge, this partnership could become a key element in developing new strategies to counter modern security challenges.
