Zelenskyy Warns of Regional Danger from Belarus's Reliance on Russia.
Zelenskyy's Address in Vilnius
According to Novyny.live: During a speech in Vilnius on January 25, Volodymyr Zelenskyy outlined the dangers posed by Belarus's dependence on Russia. The Ukrainian President stressed that this situation is a hazardous factor not only for Ukraine but for all of Belarus's neighboring states.
Zelenskyy noted that Russia is using Belarus in its war against Ukraine, which underscores the seriousness of the political situation in the region. He also expressed regret that in 2020 there was an opportunity to change the situation in Belarus, but support for the Belarusian people at that time was insufficient.
'Unfortunately, Lukashenko's white Spitz currently has more rights than the people of Belarus.' Volodymyr Zelenskyy
The Ukrainian President stated that the situation has now become significantly more complicated: 'But back then, there simply wasn't enough support for the Belarusians. Now we all feel how much more difficult, costly, and dangerous it has become for everyone because of Belarus's dependence on Moscow.' Zelenskyy also pointed out that operators of Russian 'Shahed' drones are targeting Ukraine from Belarusian territory, highlighting the threat this dependency creates.
Security Implications
Therefore, according to Zelenskyy, the situation in Belarus and its relationship with Russia has serious consequences for security in Ukraine and across Europe as a whole.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy's statement emphasizes the importance of international support for the Belarusian people, which he believes was inadequate at a critical juncture. This situation illustrates the complex geopolitical circumstances affecting the security of Ukraine and its neighbors, requiring active measures from the international community to prevent further escalation of the conflict. The issue of Belarus's reliance on Russia is becoming increasingly urgent in the context of regional stability and European security. Belarus, often described as a Kremlin client state, has provided crucial logistical and military support for Russia's invasion, making its political alignment a direct security concern for NATO's eastern flank.
