Ukraine Demands a Firm EU Accession Date, Zelenskyy Tells European Parliament.
President Addresses the European Council
According to Novyny.live: On March 19, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged the European Council to deliver concrete decisions on Ukraine’s EU membership and to ramp up defense aid. In his speech, he stressed that Ukraine’s path toward the European Union is irreversible and called for a specific date to be set for accession. According to Zelenskyy, such a timeline would act as a safeguard against external obstruction, particularly from Russia. This plea comes as Ukraine continues to push for deeper integration amid ongoing war and geopolitical tensions.
Zelenskyy stated that
“Russia must clearly understand and truly feel that Ukraine will be in Europe, and that cannot be stopped”– President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He further argued that a fixed date would mean
“Russia will have no way to block our entry”– President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. These remarks underscore Ukraine’s unwavering determination to pursue European integration despite external challenges.
Urgent Call for Stronger Defense Support
Beyond EU integration, Zelenskyy highlighted the critical need for increased military assistance from European allies. He emphasized that
“we must continue to use every opportunity to find missiles for Patriot systems”– President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. For the president, this is a matter of “saving lives”, reflecting the dire circumstances of the ongoing conflict.
Zelenskyy’s address to the European Council marked a pivotal moment in discussions about Europe’s strategy for supporting Ukraine, while reaffirming the country’s steadfast commitment to joining the EU.
The president’s statements highlight the pressing challenges Ukraine faces amid war and geopolitical strain. A clear EU accession date would not only symbolize Ukraine’s European identity but also serve as a key factor in stabilizing the domestic situation and enhancing security. Bolstering defense support is essential for protecting the nation against aggression, underscoring the need for international solidarity and cooperation with partners.
