Zelenskyy Rejects Moscow Meeting with Putin: Alternative Venues Proposed.
Zelenskyy-Putin Negotiations
According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has declined an invitation to travel to Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, instead suggesting other locations for the summit. In a firm statement, he declared:
“I will not go to Moscow to meet Putin—I don’t play those games. We can meet in Turkey, Switzerland, or the Middle East.”This remark underscores Kyiv's insistence on holding negotiations in more neutral settings, avoiding what it sees as politically charged venues.
Zelenskyy has expressed readiness to meet on neutral ground in Europe or the Middle East. He also proposed a face-to-face discussion with Putin on the sidelines of the G7 summit. However, the Russian leader showed no interest in such a meeting at that forum. Yuri Ushakov, a Russian official, urged the Ukrainian delegation to come to Moscow for talks, highlighting the deep disagreement between the two sides over where to hold discussions.
International Initiatives
At the G7 summit, former U.S. President Donald Trump noted that both Zelenskyy and Putin appeared open to dialogue, but no concrete steps have been taken so far. Meanwhile, amid these political developments, France has offered to help Ukraine repair the damaged protective sarcophagus at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, and Switzerland, together with Ukrainian restorers, plans to renovate the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery. These efforts reflect the active engagement of Ukraine’s international partners in reconstruction and support.
Zelenskyy’s refusal to meet in Moscow highlights his drive for negotiations under more impartial conditions, likely aimed at avoiding political pressure from Russia. Other international initiatives, such as:
- restoring the Chernobyl nuclear plant
- renovating the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra
demonstrate backing for Ukraine from Western allies, which could influence future talks and the broader Ukraine-Russia relationship.
