Zelenskyy Fires Back at Rubio's Accusations: What Washington Really Demands from Kyiv.
Zelenskyy Sets the Record Straight
According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has pushed back against claims made by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding security guarantees and the situation in Donbas. Zelenskyy denied that the United States is demanding a withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Donbas region in exchange for these security assurances. He stated that Washington's willingness to provide such guarantees will only materialize after active hostilities have ended.
The U.S. Stance on Security Guarantees
What exactly is Zelenskyy saying about America's conditions for security guarantees? The Ukrainian leader emphasized that all signals received during negotiations indicate that Ukraine will not obtain U.S. security guarantees after a ceasefire or even after the war concludes. Instead, he argued, these guarantees are contingent on Ukraine pulling its forces out of Donbas—a move that would effectively end the conflict.
'I am speaking completely frankly—most of the iceberg is not visible. Believe me, I have only shown the smaller part,' Zelenskyy remarked.
What led to these statements? On March 27, Marco Rubio denied that the U.S. is demanding a Ukrainian troop withdrawal from Donbas in return for security guarantees, insisting that Zelenskyy knows this accusation is false.
'I saw him (Zelenskyy) say this, and it is unfortunate that he is saying it, because he knows very well it is not true. No one told him that,' Rubio stressed.
The situation surrounding U.S. demands on Donbas and security guarantees remains fraught with tension and contradiction, as both sides hold fundamentally different views on how the conflict should end. The ongoing exchanges between Ukrainian officials and American policymakers could significantly shape future developments in Donbas and the broader security landscape of the region. Given the deep historical and political complexities, reaching a consensus will require considerable time and effort from all parties involved.
