Is China Ready to Help End the War? Zelensky Signals Willingness to Meet Xi Jinping.
Zelensky’s Potential Talks with Xi Jinping
According to UATV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has declared his readiness to sit down with Chinese President Xi Jinping to explore avenues for ending the Russia-Ukraine war. This announcement came during the G7 summit, where pressing issues of global politics and security took center stage. The summit served as a platform for world leaders to address the ongoing conflict and seek diplomatic solutions.
Mykhailo Podolyak, an advisor to the Ukrainian presidential office, pointed out that Russia’s economy heavily relies on decisions made by China. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine would welcome Chinese assistance in this effort, but noted that, as of now, there is no clear indication that Beijing is prepared to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin into ending the hostilities.
'We don’t see their stance; we don’t see that they are ready to put pressure on Putin and do everything to stop this war' - Volodymyr Zelensky
International Partners in Peace Negotiations
The Ukrainian president also stated he remains open to meeting with President Xi, adding that teams from both sides could collaborate to advance peace. Among the potential mediators in talks between Russia and Ukraine, the following countries have been mentioned:
- The United States
- Turkey
- China
These nations could play a pivotal role in identifying pathways to resolve the conflict.
Zelensky’s statement underscores the critical need for international cooperation in addressing the war in Ukraine. In particular, China’s position as a major global player could prove decisive in steering peace negotiations. Despite Beijing’s apparent reluctance to take active steps, Ukraine continues to seek ways to bring international partners into the peace process.
