Ukraine and Latvia Sign Drone Deal as Zelensky Warns Russia Is Redirecting UAVs.
Zelensky Highlights Russian Threat Using Electronic Warfare
According to Espreso.tv: On June 9, 2023, President Volodymyr Zelensky told the press that Russia is deploying electronic warfare tactics to alter the flight paths of Ukrainian drones. He warned that Moscow could exploit such incidents in its propaganda to drive a wedge between Ukraine and its European allies.
“They are changing the course to divide us in Europe, to put pressure on Finland and our Baltic friends,” Zelensky stated.
New Security Pact: Ukraine and Latvia Join Forces on Drones
That same day, Ukraine and Latvia finalized a bilateral agreement called the Drone Deal, marking a significant step in bolstering their security cooperation. This pact comes amid heightened drone-related risks recorded in Latvia and Estonia in May 2023, underscoring the urgency of such collaboration.
Just a day earlier, on June 8, 2023, NATO intercepted and shot down a drone over Latvian airspace, highlighting the growing threat posed by unmanned aerial vehicles. In response, Zelensky reaffirmed Ukraine’s commitment to assist its partners:
“We are ready to send our expert teams, to train, to coach, and to protect against such incidents.”These statements reflect Ukraine’s proactive defense efforts and its push for deeper cooperation with European nations.
These developments signal rising tensions in the region, where drone threats are becoming increasingly prominent. The Ukraine-Latvia Drone Deal could serve as a cornerstone for joint security initiatives and counter-aggression measures. Meanwhile, Zelensky’s remarks underscore the need for unified international action against Russian provocations and the critical role of European partners in strengthening defense capabilities.
