Mykhailo Fedorov Steps Down as Defense Minister

According to Espreso.tv: On July 15, Mykhailo Fedorov announced his resignation as Ukraine’s defense minister, sparking a wave of protests and outrage among military personnel and politicians. The government must respond to the challenges of war, and Ukrainians need to honestly assess the country’s situation.

The following day, July 16, Serhiy Sterhenko, an advisor to the minister, also left his post. That same day, Deputy Commander of the Ukrainian Air Force Pavlo Yelizarov submitted his resignation, expressing concerns about the nation’s defense capabilities. He stated,

“The dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov is a great evil for the country’s defense capability.”

Public Reaction

A rally in support of Fedorov took place on July 16 at Ivan Franko Square in Kyiv, where citizens voiced their anger over the decision to remove him. Meanwhile, EU Commissioner Andrius Kubilius described the resignation as a surprise for the European Union.

Commenting on his departure, Fedorov noted,

“I refused the advisor role; I never aimed to become minister.”
These events highlight significant shifts in Ukraine’s defense structure amid the ongoing war, requiring an adequate response from the authorities.

Fedorov’s resignation marks a pivotal moment in Ukraine’s history, revealing governmental instability and the challenges the country faces during wartime. The reaction from both the public and the military underscores that Ukrainians seek stability and effectiveness in defense policy. In these difficult times, it is crucial that new government appointments can provide the necessary level of protection and support for Ukraine.
