Zelenskyy Learned Nothing from the Zaluzhnyi Episode: Reactions to Fedorov’s Dismissal.
Mykhailo Fedorov’s Resignation
According to Espreso.tv: Politician Oleh Rybachuk has weighed in on Mykhailo Fedorov’s departure as Ukraine’s defense minister, arguing that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is once again turning to figures from the old guard. Fedorov stepped down on July 15, with Defense Minister Advisor Serhii Sternenko also leaving his post. Serhii Beskrestnov announced his own resignation as well.
Public Response
The following day, July 16, Pavlo Yelizarov submitted his resignation. Fedorov’s exit sparked widespread public debate, highlighted by a rally in his support held on July 16 at Ivan Franko Square in Kyiv. Rybachuk remarked that
“Zelenskyy hasn’t learned a thing from his experience with Zaluzhnyi,”emphasizing that Fedorov was one of the few leaders actively trying to overhaul the Defense Ministry’s operations.
Fedorov had been working to reform the ministry, but his removal is seen as a major blow to the country’s defense capabilities, according to Yelizarov. The resignation of Mykhailo Fedorov has thus become a flashpoint, underscoring the deep challenges facing reform within Ukraine’s defense establishment.
The departure of Fedorov, along with the related resignations, has triggered a strong public reaction, revealing serious divisions over how to ensure Ukraine’s defense readiness. The ongoing debate over President Zelenskyy’s new personnel strategy could shape future military reforms and affect public trust in the current administration. At a time when military transformation is critical for the country, the loss of top officials may carry far-reaching consequences.
