Czech Rail Operator Brings 5G to Tunnels on the Prague–Brno Line in Landmark Project.
5G Connectivity in Czech Rail Tunnels
According to Novyny.live: The Czech railway infrastructure manager 'Správa železnic' has finished rolling out a 5G network across rail tunnels to boost communication along the Prague–Brno/Ostrava corridor. Launched in March 2022, the initiative targets persistent coverage gaps—so-called 'dead zones'—in tunnels such as Vítkov in Prague and the Krasíkov tunnel. For an English-speaking audience, this marks a notable step in modernizing European rail networks, where seamless connectivity is increasingly critical for both passenger experience and operational safety.
The project came with a price tag of nearly 73 million Czech koruna, roughly 3.01 million euros. Key installations included specialized radiating cables and optical connections designed to deliver stable signal coverage underground. These upgrades significantly enhance communication quality for travelers and maintenance crews alike.
Expanding Coverage Further
Looking ahead, plans call for extending the network to 158 sites along four major rail corridors:
- Prague–Cheb
- Prague–České Budějovice
- Prague–Děčín
- Přerov–Břeclav
Contractor AŽD is handling this large-scale deployment, underscoring the Czech Republic's push to upgrade its rail infrastructure with cutting-edge communication technologies.
Bringing 5G into Czech rail tunnels represents a major leap forward in improving connectivity for passengers and bolstering railway safety. Stronger signals in these critical zones can streamline train-to-dispatcher communication and enable rapid access to information during emergencies. This reflects broader European trends where innovative infrastructure solutions are prioritized to boost transport efficiency and security.
