Russia sold Alaska for a pittance: historian reveals the true reasons behind the deal.
Ukrainian historian Kyrylo Halushko explained that Alaska was one of the most important historical complexes for the Russian mentality. The greatness and expansion of the state were of great significance for Russian society. The sale of the territory was a significant loss for Russia, as Russian school atlases did not indicate territorial losses.
The acquisition of Alaska turned out to be ineffective, as the territory could no longer generate profit due to resource depletion. Russia lost Alaska due to high financial costs and economic inefficiency. Later, it turned out that Alaska had become a wealthy region with developed infrastructure and oil resources.
Although Alaska has a high percentage of Orthodox Christians, the restoration of ties between Russia and the territory is considered unlikely. The territory became part of the USA and is not under the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Officially, the Russians did not express any harm regarding the sale of Alaska, but they could have been diverting this topic from the repeated loss of territories. The sale was justified by a financial crisis and the need to raise money.
The funds were spent on repaying external debts and eliminating the state budget deficit. Russia attracted foreign loans for rearmament and modernization of the army, as it feared a possible military conflict with the British.
From the initial wild frontier, Alaska transformed into an important base for the exploration of Arctic resources due to factors such as global warming and the discovery of new resources. The region became a transport corridor and a major base for the exploitation of Arctic resources.
Explaining the reasons for the sale of Alaska, the Ukrainian historian spoke about the historical significance of the territory for Russia and the losses from this step. The sale led to massive losses for Russia, but it later turned out that this territory could have become a significant source of prosperity due to its natural resources.Read also
