Grant Withdrawal for the Venice Biennale

According to UATV: The European Commission has confirmed its decision to revoke a grant for the Venice Biennale, a move initially proposed in April 2022. The funding package, totaling €2 million, was designated to support the event over a three-year span from 2025 to 2028. The decision was triggered by the planned opening of a Russian pavilion at the film festival, scheduled for 2026.

It is worth noting that the Russian pavilion would have operated under strict limitations. This development has sparked outrage in cultural circles, with activists from Pussy Riot and Femen staging a protest in front of the Russian pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Additionally, ahead of the 61st Venice Biennale, the entire jury resigned just nine days before the exhibition’s opening.

Henna Virkkunen, a European Commission representative, emphasized the importance of cultural initiatives: 'Culture in Europe, funded by taxpayer money, must promote and protect democratic values.'

Tensions in Cultural Relations

The funding denial for the Venice Biennale underscores the strained cultural ties between Europe and Russia, particularly amid current political tensions. This decision could have ripple effects on other cultural projects involving Russia, signaling that the European Union remains committed to aligning its cultural policy with democratic principles. The protests and reactions from cultural figures highlight a growing sensitivity around cultural representation in an era of global political instability.
