Historian Reveals Surprising Final Death Toll Estimate for the Volhynia Tragedy.
Investigating the Casualties of the Volhynia Massacre
According to Espreso.tv: The Volhynia tragedy remains one of the most painful chapters in Ukrainian-Polish relations. Historian Yaroslav Hrytsak, a doctor of historical sciences, has shared findings from his research into the victims and how these numbers affect political ties between Ukraine and Poland. His work relies heavily on archival records, including parish registers from Greek Catholic, Roman Catholic, and Orthodox churches, which he considers highly reliable since they often list even the cause of death.
During his presentation, Hrytsak also highlighted joint Ukrainian-Polish commemorations held on July 11 in Volhynia to honor those lost in the tragic events. However, he expressed concern that the research began too late, resulting in incomplete data. 'We started this too late. If such work had begun in the 1990s, the data would be much more complete,' he stated.

Hrytsak noted that in conflicts like this, both sides often inflate casualty figures—sometimes by two or three times. 'I think the final estimate will be significantly lower,' he added. He emphasized that the Volhynia tragedy cannot be understood separately from the broader context of World War II. The research aims not only to establish facts but also to deepen understanding of the complex historical relationship between Ukraine and Poland.
The Role of Archival Sources
Hrytsak’s study underscores the critical importance of archival materials in examining historical events that have left deep scars on both nations. Joint commemorations of Volhynia victims could serve as a foundation for closer ties between Ukraine and Poland, but accurate data and acknowledgment of past mistakes are essential for building trust between the countries. Understanding history and conducting objective analysis are key to preventing similar conflicts in the future.
