The climber who conquered Everest shared 5 life hacks for surviving in a cold apartment.
According to ТСН: The city authorities urge Ukrainians to prepare for the cold and stock up on power banks, warm clothing, blankets, water, and food. The reasons are significant cooling and Russian attacks on the energy system. A correspondent gathered advice from specialists and life hacks for survival in cold weather conditions.
This winter in Ukraine has proven to be much harsher than previous ones. The bad weather causes serious problems on the roads, leads to the halting of trams and trolleybuses, as well as mass accidents. In addition, the Ukrainian energy sector is being attacked by Russia.
Winter blackout: survival experience
Tetyana Yalovchak, a record-holding climber who conquered Everest and other peaks, shares her experience. After the attack, her house in Kyiv region was left without electricity and heating, and the temperature in the apartment dropped to 16 degrees.
Tetyana Yalovchak, climber: "Not everyone knows and understands how to live in cold weather conditions".
Life hack #1: The two-bottle rule
To fall asleep in a cold room, Tetyana uses a method proven in the mountains.
Tetyana Yalovchak: "When I go to sleep in a tent in the mountains, I always take a bottle of warm water with me. Without it, I can't sleep with cold extremities. If it's a small bottle, I put it by my feet and hold the other one".
Life hack #2: The principle of layering in clothing
Mountain gear can withstand temperatures down to -40°C, but you can also keep warm with regular clothing by following the layering principle.
Thermal underwear (wicks moisture away).
Fleece jacket (retains heat).
Down jacket (creates insulation). "If it's minus 20 outside, these three layers are essential to move comfortably," says the climber.
Life hack #3: Don't remove your hat
Tetyana reminds that 80% of heat escapes through the head, so in a cold apartment, a hat is an essential accessory even when sleeping.
She also advises wrapping power banks and batteries in warm clothing to prevent them from losing charge due to the cold.
Life hack #4: Hot food without a stove
If the stove is electric, you can use a camping burner that quickly boils water. Tetyana cooks dehydrated food on it.
Life hack #5: Tent in the middle of the room
In case of severe cooling, the best way to warm up at night is to set up a tent on the bed or the floor.
Hanna Serova, family doctor: "It's like a house within a house, there will be a more insulated warm spot. For families with children, even a regular play tent can become a home 'point of invincibility'. You can put a blanket, flashlights there, and the kids will have a warm place to play".
Tetyana Yalovchak is confident that Ukrainians will quickly adapt to the new conditions.
"Ukrainians are amazing people. They adapt to everything to avoid being with the 'Russian world'".
