According to Novyny.live: JR East, Japan’s railway operator, has developed a new shock absorber system for Shinkansen bullet trains that reduces the risk of derailment during earthquakes by 50%. Known as lateral seismic dampers, this innovation features a reinforced design that effectively absorbs the strong vibrations generated by seismic activity. Japan, being one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world, constantly seeks to enhance rail safety through advanced engineering.
Implementation Plan
The new dampers are scheduled for deployment in fall 2027, and will be installed on the E5, E6, E7, and E8 train series. This represents a major step forward in improving transportation safety across Japan, a nation frequently impacted by earthquakes.
