Terrified witnesses watched as rescuers tried to extract survivors from the wreckage.
According to El-Watan News, the number of injured exceeds 100, and will continue to rise as rescuers retrieve more passengers.
Reports state that the train flipped over after colliding with a freight truck, and an investigation is currently underway regarding the driver's actions.
Chilling moments captured rescuers rushing to ambulances with the injured, while crowds gathered around the train wreck.
The Ministry of Health reported:
“The Minister, his deputy Dr. Mohamed Al-Tayeb, immediately went to the scene.”
The tragic incident occurred near the capital when the train derailed between Mersa Matruh and Alexandria.
30 ambulances have been dispatched to help transport the injured.
Photos also show the Matruh governor and the Minister of Transport at the crash site, surrounded by a crowd.
All trains on the line are currently halted, as the accident happened between the Fuka and Jalal stations while the train was traveling on the Matruh-Moharram Bek route.
Many affected passengers were thrown from their seats when the train suddenly derailed.
Cranes were deployed to lift the damaged coaches back onto the tracks.

The Ministry of Health confirmed that 55 individuals were injured, of which 33 were transferred to Gena Central Hospital, and 21 to Ras Al-Hakma Hospital.
However, according to local media, the number of casualties has risen.
“Medical teams continue to assess the condition of the patients, providing all necessary resources to offer assistance,”- stated representatives of the authorities.
“Three deaths have been confirmed, the bodies of which have been transferred to the morgue of Ras Al-Hakma Hospital, which is currently under the control of the public prosecutor.”
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the accident.
The Minister of Health expressed condolences to the families of the deceased:
“The Minister of Health expresses his sincere condolences and support to the relatives of the deceased.”
Let us recall that in September of last year, as a result of the collision of two passenger trains in the Nile Delta, at least three people died, including two children.
Another 49 were injured in this horrific accident in Zahgazig, the capital of Sharqia.
Videos from the scene showed how one of the train's carriages was crushed as a result of the impact, surrounded by a crowd, as men attempted to pull the injured through the windows.
Train accidents and disasters occur frequently in Egypt, as the aging railway system suffers from poor management. In recent years, the government has announced initiatives to improve the rail transport.
