The USA questions the attack on Putin's residence: what is known about the negotiations.
According to ТСН: In Washington, there is caution regarding the Kremlin's accusations regarding the alleged attempt by Ukraine to attack Vladimir Putin's residence in Valdai.
This was stated by the U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO Matthew Whitaker on Fox Business.
“Inappropriate” moment for a strike
Whitaker noted that U.S. and allied intelligence is still verifying this information, but in his opinion, the logic of the situation suggests otherwise.
“It seems a bit inappropriate to be so close to a peace agreement — and Ukraine really wants to reach a peace agreement — and then do something that could be seen as reckless or counterproductive,”
— the ambassador remarked.
At the same time, he emphasized the ongoing aggression from Russia.
“Ukraine is receiving drone and rocket strikes on its capital every night. And all they can do is defend themselves,”
— added Whitaker.
Agreement ready at 95%
Discussing the state of negotiations, Whitaker shared optimistic data. According to him, the parties’ positions have come significantly closer.
“We are hearing that the agreement is ready at 90-95%. This is fantastic. The only person who could bring both sides to the table and, most importantly, keep them there — is President Trump,”
— he noted.
Main obstacles
According to the ambassador, security guarantee issues have been virtually resolved, but there are several key territorial questions remaining:
Where exactly will the line of demarcation run?
How far must the troops withdraw?
Who will monitor the adherence to the ceasefire?
“This is very complicated and requires detailing... If we get a peace agreement that lasts only a few days — this is not an agreement at all,”
— concluded Whitaker.
As is known, the information about the alleged massive attack by Ukrainian drones on Putin's residence in Valdai has been questioned not only by analysts but also by eyewitnesses. Residents of the nearest city stated that they did not notice any signs of hostilities on the night of December 29.
This situation illustrates the complexity of the current relations between Ukraine and Russia, as well as the importance of diplomacy in searching for pathways to peace. Continuing negotiations, considering the remaining questions, could be a decisive factor in improving the situation in the region.
