The Settebello Tanker Incident

According to Espreso.tv: A US airstrike on the tanker Settebello, which carried 24 Indian crew members, resulted in three fatalities. While 21 sailors were rescued, the following individuals lost their lives:

  • Cadet Aditya Sharma
  • Fitter Shivanand Chaurasia
  • Chief Engineer Patnala Suresh

The attack on the vessel is part of escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, unfolding against the backdrop of recent regional events.

Regional Situation

The US military deployed 'precision-guided munitions' targeting the tanker's engine room, marking the third such incident within a week. On April 13, the US struck the tanker Marivex, which sank; however, all 24 crew members were rescued by Omani forces. Another attack occurred on April 17 against the tanker Jalveer near Oman's Port of Shinas, where all 20 sailors survived. Since the blockade began on April 13, CENTCOM has halted operations of eight vessels and diverted an additional 134 ships.

Currently, over 18,000 Indian sailors are stationed in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, raising serious concerns for the Indian government. Officials have voiced alarm, emphasizing that 'strikes against commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in the region must cease.'

The father of deceased cadet Aditya Sharma stated: 'Who is responsible for the deaths of three Indian sailors? The circumstances of their deaths must be investigated.'

It is worth recalling that on February 28, 2026, the US and Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iran aimed at destroying missile, military, and nuclear infrastructure. In response, Iran effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz, and the US imposed a full naval blockade of Iranian ports starting April 13. However, on April 17, both sides agreed to a ceasefire, signaling a potential reduction in regional tensions.

This incident underscores the growing instability in the region, which could have serious consequences for international shipping and the safety of seafarers. In response to the loss of its citizens, the Indian government may ramp up diplomatic efforts to secure the protection of its sailors and call for an international investigation into the events. The situation demands close attention, as further escalations could threaten stability in the Persian Gulf and disrupt global oil supplies, impacting the world economy.
