Massive Power Outage in Moldova Traced to Ukrainian Grid Failure.
Moldova Plunged into Darkness by Ukrainian Grid Disruption
According to Novyny.live: A major power failure struck Moldova on January 31, 2023, triggered by a critical fault on the high-voltage line linking the Moldovan and Ukrainian power grids. The incident occurred at 10:42 on the 400 kV Isakcea – Vulcănești – MGRES transmission line, causing a severe voltage drop in Moldova's national system and leaving numerous towns and villages without electricity. Moldova's energy grid is heavily interconnected with Ukraine's, making it vulnerable to cascading failures from across the border.
The outage temporarily cut power to homes, businesses, and social institutions across several communities. Specialists from Moldelectrica initiated repair operations and managed to restore electricity to some areas, though the overall situation remained unstable for a period.
Root Cause of the Blackout
The blackout originated when the loss of several power transmission lines within Ukraine activated an automatic protection system, which cut off the power supply. This caused the frequency in Moldova's energy system to plummet to 48 Hz, subsequently triggering the automatic safeguards in Moldova's own grid and resulting in a partial, widespread blackout.
This incident underscores the critical importance of energy system stability, particularly given the close integration between the Ukrainian and Moldovan grids.
Loss of power can have severe consequences not only for households but also for industrial operations and essential social services. Restoring a reliable power supply and ensuring the stability of energy infrastructure remain top priorities for Moldovan energy operators moving forward.
