BMW refuses to abandon sedans: sedans remain the foundation of the brand.
According to Korrespondent.net: Despite the popularity of crossovers worldwide, BMW does not plan to abandon the production of sedans. As noted by GoAuto, Oliver Heilmer, head of the design direction Neue Klasse and former chief designer of Mini, confirmed that sedans remain 'the foundation of the brand.'
'A few years ago it seemed that sedans would disappear. But in reality, this segment is quite stable. Today we make a clear statement: BMW is about sedans. A small, sporty, elegant mid-size sedan is the foundation of our brand,' emphasized Heilmer.
BMW currently has one of the most complete ranges of sedans among premium manufacturers: 3 Series, 4 Series Gran Coupe, 5 Series, and 7 Series. The company also confirmed that it is preparing new models. For example, after the electric crossover iX3, the release of the sedan i3 is planned, and later – a new generation of the 3 Series with a traditional internal combustion engine. Development is also underway for sporty versions and updates for the 5th and 7th series.
Design of the new models
Regarding the design of new cars, Heilmer noted that it will become 'much more restrained.' While the signature 'kidneys' will remain, their sizes and proportions will change depending on the region, which may indicate a departure from the currently enlarged grilles that have received mixed consumer feedback.
It is also worth noting that recently BMW presented the first official look at the new X5.
Collaboration with Mercedes
In addition, it is reported that Mercedes is considering the possibility of collaborating with BMW in the field of gasoline engines.

BMW actively supports traditional sedans despite market trends towards crossovers. This indicates a certain strategy of the company, which aims to preserve what has made it the number one brand among premium manufacturers. Collaboration with Mercedes may also open new opportunities for both manufacturers in developing engine technologies.
