On August 27, the German government supported a bill on voluntary military service. This decision was made to increase the army's size by approximately 180,000 people in response to threats from Russia. Information about this was published on the federal government's website, reports FREEДОМ.

The document will be submitted for parliamentary consideration. If it is adopted, the law will come into effect in January next year. According to German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, the new model of military service is based on the principle of volunteering. It is worth noting that if there are not enough volunteers, mandatory conscription may be introduced.

“The Bundeswehr must expand. The international security situation: primarily, Russia's aggressive stance, dictates this necessity. We need not only well-equipped forces; we are already on the way to this. We have been doing this for two and a half years and will not stop. But we also need a strong Bundeswehr in terms of personnel. Only then will deterrence be truly effective against Russia,” said Boris Pistorius.

Chancellor's comments

Chancellor Friedrich Merz also noted that Germany must become the country with the strongest army in Europe. For this, the Bundeswehr needs to increase the size of its armed forces, which until now have only been reduced.
