How BYD Surpassed Tesla as the Top EV Seller in 22 Countries.
Chinese Automaker Overtakes Tesla
According to Novyny.live: Between 2020 and 2025, the Chinese company BYD outsold Tesla in 22 countries, culminating in its rise to become the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturer in 2025. This remarkable achievement was driven by BYD's sales growth, which reached 2.26 million EVs in 2025, marking a 28% increase compared to previous years. This shift highlights the intensifying global competition in the electric vehicle sector, where established leaders are facing new challengers.
Concurrently, Tesla's EV deliveries declined, dropping by 8.6% from 1.79 million in 2024 to 1.64 million in 2025. This contraction was a key factor in BYD's ascent to global prominence. Although BYD sold approximately 3.5 million vehicles in China in 2025—a 10% decrease from the prior year—this domestic dip did not hinder its strengthened international position.
BYD's Global Expansion Strategy
BYD continues to pursue its worldwide expansion, with plans to open a factory in Hungary in 2026. However, in a strategic recalibration of its production capacity growth, the company abandoned its plans to build a plant in Mexico in 2025. These moves underscore BYD's ambition to become a dominant leader in the global EV manufacturing landscape.
The company's success on the world stage signals a significant shift in the competitive environment, with Chinese manufacturers increasingly claiming leading roles. While Tesla's sales dip points to potential challenges for the American pioneer, BYD is concentrating on broadening its production capabilities and international footprint. These developments are likely to reshape industry trends in the electric vehicle market for years to come.
