Last weekend, Catalonia was hit by severe flooding, which inundated large areas.
Rescue teams found the body of the deceased boy in the San Pere de Riudebitlles river, not far from Barcelona.
“The Catalan Interior Minister, Nuria Parlón, confirmed the boy’s death and stated that rescue teams are still searching for his father,” the local press reports.
It is known that the father's car was swept away by the floods, causing both to be submerged. During the events, about 600 emergency calls were recorded, and rescuers assisted more than 200 people.
Additionally, 27 people were evacuated from the cable car at the Montserrat Monastery due to landslides.
The storm also caused chaos in air travel: dozens of flights to and from Barcelona-El Prat experienced delays or cancellations.
Officials apologized for the inconveniences caused by transport problems, particularly due to landslides and fallen trees.
Dangerous Weather Conditions in Europe
The national meteorological agency AEMET reported that in some areas of Catalonia, up to 40 liters of rainfall per square meter fell within one hour. Orange alerts were issued for the Balearic Islands and Valencia, yellow alerts for Aragon, Asturias, Andalusia, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, and Murcia.
It is expected that harsh weather conditions will continue, and parts of the regions will again be exposed to serious rainfall, only two weeks after the previous flooding incident.
A train with 60 passengers had to stop on the tracks, while six units of the Catalan fire brigade were deployed for evacuation.
