According to ТСН: The cost of buckwheat in Ukrainian stores in 2026 may reach 40-42 hryvnias per kilogram. Despite the fact that the rate of inflation has slightly decreased compared to last year, economists predict further price increases for this staple food by 8-10%.

This was stated in an interview by economist Volodymyr Chizh.

He noted that by the end of 2025, the price of buckwheat had already risen significantly, reaching 37-38 hryvnias per kilogram — that is a third more than in 2024.

“In 2026, the price increase for buckwheat may overall be 8-10% compared to last year. Accordingly, its retail price will be approximately 40-42 hryvnias per kilogram,” said Volodymyr Chizh.

Main factors influencing prices

Experts point to several reasons for the price increase. The main ones include rising production costs, high energy prices, and complicated logistics. Additionally, a moderate rise in grain prices on the global market will also affect the overall cost of products.

“A sharp spike in prices is curbing the surplus of certain types of cereals in global markets. However, all forecasts remain preliminary for now,” the economist emphasized.

“It will be necessary to understand the state of our energy sector in the coming months, whether there will be an increase in the cost of electricity for businesses, and what the harvests of grains, particularly feed crops, will be like,” Volodymyr Chizh explained.

It is also worth noting that significant price increases for fish and seafood are expected in Ukraine. Experts note that in 2026, a number of negative factors will affect the prices of these products, putting pressure on producers.

This week, there is a trend towards rising prices for white cabbage in the vegetable segment. Producers have begun to massively revise prices for this product in response to changes in supply volumes and depletion of stocks in warehouses.

Thus, the rise in prices for basic food products will remain a relevant topic in Ukraine, given the numerous factors affecting the pricing situation. Economic forecasts usually change, so it is important to monitor developments to understand how this will affect consumers' daily lives.
