Ukrainian Motorists Face Rising Fuel Costs in January

According to TSN.ua: Fuel prices in Ukraine increased in January 2026, driven by a combination of rising global oil prices and the depreciation of the hryvnia. Further price hikes are anticipated. According to expert data, while the price of oil fell to $60 per barrel in December 2022, it climbed to $65 per barrel by January 2026. This increase was the primary reason for a rise in the cost per liter of fuel by approximately 1.5 hryvnias.

Furthermore, the devaluation of the hryvnia added roughly another 1 hryvnia to the per-liter price. Consequently, the wholesale cost of gasoline and diesel rose by about 2 hryvnias per liter. Expert Serhiy Kuyun noted:

'We are currently seeing price increases at the wholesale purchasing level. For now, the market is holding steady due to old reserves, but we should expect further price growth in January.' Serhiy Kuyun

It is also important to note that the consumption volume of so-called 'generator fuel' grew by approximately 10%, reaching 70-80 thousand tons per month. This also influences fuel price formation. Serhiy Kuyun emphasized:

'The consumption volume of so-called 'generator fuel' has grown by about 10%, to around 70-80 thousand tons per month.' Serhiy Kuyun

Therefore, vehicle owners can expect further increases in fuel prices in Ukraine in the coming months. Amid rising global oil prices and currency instability, the fuel market remains under pressure, which could impact motorists' budgets. This situation reflects broader economic challenges in the region, where energy costs are a significant household expense.

The rise in Ukrainian fuel prices is a result of global economic factors, including shifts in world oil markets and currency fluctuations. This is likely to lead to higher costs for drivers, especially as demand for fuel continues to grow. The government and businesses should consider these trends to forecast future market changes and potential measures to mitigate the impact on consumers.
