Current Fuel Costs in Ukraine

According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian fuel prices are shaped by global geopolitics and international oil benchmarks. As of March 12, 2023, prices have stabilized overall, though diesel fuel has seen increases at several major retail chains.

Diesel Price Increases

Specifically, the UPG network raised diesel prices by 49 kopiyok, WOG by 1 hryvnia, and both Socar and Ukrnafta by 2 hryvnias. The average fuel prices per liter on March 12 were as follows:

  • A-92 - 67.74 UAH
  • A-95 - 69.76 UAH
  • A-95+ - 73.62 UAH
  • A-100 - 80.46 UAH
  • Diesel - 72.28 UAH
  • Autogas (LPG) - 42.41 UAH

Expert Oleksiy Kushch points out that the situation at Ukrainian filling stations is currently entirely dependent on global geopolitical factors. He also emphasizes that historically, the state has lost billions of hryvnias by allowing importers excessive profits, while drivers continued to pay the maximum market price. Kushch added that if the market is willing to buy a liter of gasoline for 100 hryvnias, that is precisely what it will cost, regardless of the tax component. Price stability for fuel in Ukraine is directly linked to world oil quotations and the duration of the military conflict in the Middle East. Ukraine's fuel market remains highly sensitive to international supply shocks and price volatility.

The rise in diesel prices highlights the market's sensitivity to external conditions and fluctuations in global oil prices. Amid instability on the international stage and its impact on energy markets, Ukrainian consumers should anticipate further changes in fuel pricing. Analysis of the situation indicates a need for Ukraine to adapt to new economic realities to mitigate the negative impact on drivers and consumers. The role of the state in regulating the market to prevent excessive importer profits under conditions of high prices also remains crucial.
