A Chinese Man Inserted a Leech into His Urethra: Emergency Surgery Due to an Internet Method.
According to ТСН: In China, a 23-year-old man needed urgent surgery after he decided to insert a live leech into his bladder, believing in a 'healing' method he found online.
The incident occurred with a resident of Zhengzhou city in Henan province. The young man named Zheng tried to apply a folk method he read online and independently inserted a leech about 5 centimeters long through his urethra.
After that, he began to experience severe pain and problems with urination. The leech initially blocked the urethra, and later it penetrated into the bladder, where it clung to the walls. There, the parasite began to release anticoagulants, which only worsened his condition.
The pain became so unbearable that the man was forced to seek help at a local hospital. Medical staff were shocked by his explanations, and an ultrasound examination confirmed the presence of a live leech in the bladder.
Doctors performed an emergency surgical intervention. A team of urologists, led by the deputy head of the department, performed a transurethral procedure to remove the foreign body. The procedure was successful — the leech was completely removed, after which the patient was once again able to urinate normally, and the pain sensations disappeared.
Doctors use this case as a warning to society, emphasizing the risks of trusting pseudoscientific healing methods prevalent on the web.
According to the director of the urology department at the Zhengzhou People's Hospital, Dr. Shang Zhongjie, such manipulations and subsequent surgeries can lead to serious complications. Possible consequences include chronic pain, urinary disturbances, recurrent infections, and urethral stricture.
This case vividly demonstrates the dangers of self-treatment, which should be avoided. Doctors advise always seeking help from specialists and not relying on unverified methods, as this can lead to serious health consequences.
