Chonhar Bridge Completely Destroyed: Route Between Occupied Kherson Region and Crimea Cut Off.
Damage to the Chonhar Bridge
According to UATV: Ukrainian forces struck the Chonhar Bridge again during the night of June 9, rendering it completely unusable. This critical infrastructure has been fully knocked out, severing the transport link between the occupied parts of Kherson Oblast and Crimea. The bridge first suffered damage on June 7, and the latest attack, carried out using 'Begemot' drones and Fire Point systems, delivered the final blow.
Impact on Transport Links
The destruction of the Chonhar Bridge has forced major rerouting for traffic between Crimea and occupied territories. Vehicles that once crossed this bridge now must take alternative checkpoints, adding 150–200 kilometers to the journey to Melitopol. Drivers can use:
- the 'Armiansk' checkpoint, which mainly handles cars, private vehicles, and scheduled buses;
- the 'Perekop' checkpoint, primarily designed for freight trucks, vans, and organized convoys.
“The shattered Chonhar Bridge is new—it was built by the Russians after Ukrainian defense forces dismantled the old one in 2022-2023.”
Pavlo Lakiichuk
This highlights the bridge's importance for logistics and military operations on the southeastern front. He added that now, “all forces and resources for the Russian army operating in the Zaporizhzhia direction are making a huge detour, rerouted and overloading the Perekop Isthmus.”
The situation at the Chonhar Bridge holds strategic significance for both sides of the conflict. Losing this transport corridor complicates logistics for Russian troops, potentially undermining their ability to hold positions in the region. Conversely, it underscores the effectiveness of Ukrainian forces in striking key infrastructure targets, a crucial aspect of wartime strategy. The bridge's future will likely play a decisive role in shaping military operations along the southeastern front.
