Demographer named the only way to restore the population of Ukrainians.
Ukraine is experiencing the negative impact of depopulation
Ukraine, unfortunately, is facing the negative effects of depopulation, and the return of refugees will not change the situation. This was reported by the director of the Institute of Demography and Social Studies, Ella Libanova, in an interview with LB.ua.
Libanova noted that the birth rate in Ukraine remains low, and the demographic structure is increasingly resembling a diamond shape, indicating a decrease in the potential for demographic growth.
"If we want to increase the population, we have only one way - attracting migrants from other countries," emphasized Libanova.
However, the expert doubts that Ukrainian society is ready to accept a large number of foreigners. She noted that Ukraine has always been a mono-ethnic country (except for Transcarpathia and Odessa region) and that the issue of intercultural tolerance is not yet part of social education.
"We are not a xenophobic nation, but we are not as tolerant as Europeans. We need to learn this," emphasized Libanova.
She also pointed out that in some aspects, the Ukrainian model of society may be more effective than the European one, but the problem of migrant integration remains a challenge for the country.
The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has suspended emergency aid in Ukraine due to funding freeze from the United States.
