Former MP recalled how Kuchma turned the adoption of the Constitution into his own victory.

Former deputy Taras Stetskyi shared his memories of the adoption of the Constitution of Ukraine in 1996. He noted that Leonid Kuchma appeared in parliament early in the morning on June 28.

"We well knew that Kuchma did not support this version of the Constitution. But he understood that he needed to join the winners - those who rejected his idea of a referendum," Stetskyi emphasized.

Stetskyi mentioned that under Kuchma's leadership, Oleksandr Moroz brought the issue of the Constitution to a final vote, which ended with 315 votes 'for'.

'After the Constitution was adopted, Leonid Kuchma apologized to the deputies for 'not quite correct stimulation of the process', hinting that his resistance helped mobilize the parliament,' Stetskyi said.

The night in parliament when the Constitution was adopted was one of the most dramatic and prolonged. Deputies faced intense psychological pressure, received threats, and encountered possible obstacles.
