Toyota Mirai — the most absurd car today: why the hydrogen sedan is useless.
The luxurious sedan, elegant design, quality interior — all of this can be said about the Toyota Mirai. But there is one detail that makes it a subject of heated discussions: the fuel it runs on. Mirai is a hydrogen car, and this feature turns it from an alluring offer into quite a controversial purchase.
The main problem with Mirai is not its technical specifications, but the infrastructure. More precisely — its almost complete absence. In the USA, for example, there are only 51 hydrogen filling stations, and all of them are concentrated in California. This means that outside this state, the car is useless.
(The situation in Ukraine is not better. The nearest hydrogen filling station to our country is located in Poland).
Low sales of Mirai and rapid depreciation are a direct result of problems with the refueling infrastructure. The car loses value faster than most of its competitors, as its limited functionality scares away potential buyers.
Of course, we should not completely write off Mirai. Perhaps in the future, hydrogen will indeed become a popular fuel, and the model will get a second chance. But today, this car is more of an interesting engineering experiment than a practical means of transportation. This is the main paradox: Mirai is a technology of the future that is being sold today but has no conditions for this.
Supporters of hydrogen cars like the Toyota Mirai face the lack of appropriate infrastructure for their effective operation. The still insufficient distribution of hydrogen filling stations makes such cars impractical in many regions, affecting their popularity and market value.Read also
