11 Items Experts Say You Should Never Put in a Dishwasher.
Expert Advice on Dishwasher Use
According to TSN.ua: Home appliance specialists have revealed which kitchen items should be kept out of the dishwasher to avoid damage. According to Chiufo, who leads dishwasher testing at Consumer Reports, certain materials can suffer serious harm from the machine's cleaning process. Copper pots and pans, for instance, may darken due to oxidation if not dried immediately after washing.

Wooden items like cutting boards and utensils are also best washed by hand, as high heat can cause them to warp. Richard Tarrant, Senior Vice President at Bosch Home Appliances, explains:
'Wood can not only deform under high temperatures but also swell from water and crack, creating an ideal breeding ground for bacteria.' - Richard Tarrant
Sharp knives, Chiufo notes, tend to dull more quickly in the dishwasher, reducing their effectiveness. 'The dishwasher will ruin nonstick coating fast, forcing you to replace your cookware sooner than necessary,' he adds. Crystal glassware should also be avoided, since detergents and salt can lead to glass corrosion.
Other items experts recommend keeping out of the dishwasher include:
- Cast iron cookware
- Copper cookware
- Pewter, brass, and bronze items
Tarrant warns: 'Detergent and salt can damage the surface and cause glass corrosion.' Additionally, labels on jars might clog the washing system, leading to malfunctions.
Chiufo points out that there are 'even more reasons not to ruin them in the dishwasher.' He also cautions against using liquid soap as a substitute when dishwasher powder runs out, as this can create serious issues. Richard Tarrant sums it up:
'It's not just unpleasant—it's dangerous.' - Richard Tarrant
When using a dishwasher, it's crucial to be selective about what goes inside to prevent damage and ensure safety. These tips from experts highlight the need for caution, as the wrong items can harm both your dishes and the appliance itself. Paying attention to the materials of your kitchen tools will help keep them in good condition and avoid unnecessary repair or replacement costs.
