Experts explained how to ensure the operation of a gas boiler during a power outage.
Due to energy supply issues, many Ukrainians have problems with the operation of gas boilers during power outages. Experts offer solutions to ensure heating and hot water supply in homes.
According to "Khvylya", this is discussed in the plot of GazPravda.
Prolonged power outages are a reality of our lives, and while this can be endured in summer, it will be much harder in winter. Modern gas boilers that provide heating and hot water depend on electricity to operate pumps and other components. When the electricity is cut off, these boilers stop working.
"Unfortunately, standard power banks we use to charge our phones won't work. More powerful batteries or charging stations are needed," notes the expert.
If you have a wall-mounted boiler, it requires a 220V network connection and is 100% dependent on electricity. Today, there are several ways to provide alternative power for this type of boiler. One of them is the use of batteries, batteries with uninterruptible power supply (UPS), UPS inverters, battery systems, energy independence systems such as EcoFlow or Power Stream Power Option, which provide energy for the house, including gas boilers.
Experts recommend using lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries, which are the safest and most durable. This also affects their cost.
"Lithium iron phosphate batteries are completely safe, environmentally friendly, sealed, and do not require replacement or addition of new electrolyte. They do not lose their properties during deep discharge and can work continuously, providing your equipment with energy," notes the plot.
If you decide to install a charging station, you need to know the required power and capacity. On average, a boiler consumes from 60 to 160 W per hour. Exact figures for your boiler can be found in the technical passport. The charging station must be powerful enough to start the boiler. Additionally, you need to calculate the required battery capacity, meaning how long it will ensure the operation of the boiler.
"To do this, you need to multiply the power of your boiler (e.g., 100 W) by the number of hours it operates (e.g., six) and divide by the voltage of the battery or accumulator. It results that for the standard boiler to work for 6 hours, you need a battery with a capacity of 50 Ah," explain the experts.
Some boilers may not work from charging stations due to lack of grounding. The solution may be the use of a special extension cord, but experts recommend contacting specialists for such changes.
Experts predict that powerful batteries will become common household equipment in the near future:
"We are heading to a situation where every apartment, alongside a washing machine, boiler, and gas stove, will also have a battery. This battery will have a minimum capacity of 7-10 kWh, allowing the household to function minimally for a day," say the experts.
If you own your own home, it is recommended to consider installing solar panels or generators as additional options for ensuring independence from electricity.
Ukrainians are urged to prepare for the heating season in advance and share their experiences of preparing for possible power supply interruptions.
