Charges of Illicit Enrichment Filed

According to TSN.ua: A former deputy head of the Odesa Regional Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support has been formally charged with illicit enrichment and money laundering. From 2020 to 2022, the official acquired assets valued at over 37.7 million Ukrainian hryvnias, an amount exceeding his legitimate income by more than 6,500 times the non-taxable minimum income for citizens. This case is part of a broader anti-corruption drive in Ukraine, which has intensified since the full-scale invasion.

Assets and Investigation Details

The assets in question, which were registered to close relatives, include:

  • Five premium-class automobiles,
  • Three residential houses with land plots,
  • Funds held in a personal bank account.

The properties were formally registered under the names of the official's wife, mother, mother-in-law, and wife's grandmother. His declared income was insufficient to justify such expenditures, indicating the likely criminal origin of the assets.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing, focusing on how the suspect orchestrated the acquisition and use of illicitly obtained property. He is also accused of knowingly filing false information in his 2023 asset declaration. The charges fall under Article 368-5 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

“This incident highlights ongoing corruption issues within Ukrainian state institutions.”

This case follows a recent notice of suspicion served to former Ukrainian Vice Prime Minister Oleksiy Chernyshov, who was documented receiving over $1.2 million USD and nearly 100,000 euros in cash.

A key aspect of the probe is the registration of the scrutinized assets under family members' names, suggesting an attempt to evade accountability. Such cases provoke significant public concern and raise questions about the transparency and integrity of public officials.
