EU Prepares New Sanctions Against Russia

According to UATV: The European Union is preparing a new set of sanctions against Russia, timed to coincide with the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion. This 20th package aims to completely sever Moscow's revenue from energy exports and complicate its ability to finance the war. A draft of the sanctions package, which includes a series of new restrictions, was presented on February 6.

Key Measures in the Package

Specifically, the European Commission is introducing a ban on the maritime transport of Russian oil, coordinated with G7 nations. The restrictions target 43 vessels, bringing the total number of 'shadow fleet' tankers on EU sanctions lists to 640. Furthermore, the EU is imposing restrictions on 20 Russian regional banks, with the total value of trade restrictions exceeding 360 million euros.

Ursula von der Leyen stated that the goal is to inflict serious damage on the Russian economy.

EU leadership emphasizes that the new sanctions are designed to drastically cut the Kremlin's capacity to fund its military campaign. Paola Pino also stressed that sanctions are considered a key tool for pressuring Russia. Kaja Kallas added that these measures are having a substantial impact on Russia's economic situation. The European Commission plans to use an anti-circumvention mechanism to ensure the sanctions' effectiveness.

This new sanctions package is part of the European Union's broader strategy to support Ukraine and diminish Russia's economic potential amid the ongoing conflict. The restrictions on the energy sector, particularly on the maritime transport of oil, are intended to reduce Kremlin revenues used for financing military operations. These coordinated sanctions, developed in partnership with allies, represent a sustained effort to economically isolate Russia and increase the cost of its aggression against Ukraine.
