EU Readies 20th Sanctions Package Against Russia: Details on the New Measures.
EU's New Sanctions Package Targets Russia
According to Novyny.live: The European Union is preparing to impose a new set of restrictions on Russia, marking its 20th sanctions package, which could be approved in the near future. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced this during a briefing on February 24th, the date marking the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion. She stressed that the decision on sanctions must be unanimous. These coordinated measures represent a sustained Western effort to curb Russia's ability to finance its war.
“Sanctions must weaken Russia,”
Ursula von der Leyen
She added: “We worked quite successfully on the 19th sanctions package. None of these processes were easy, but based on previous experience, I am confident that we will also adopt the 20th package. It is only a matter of time.”
On the same day, Volodymyr Zelenskyy enacted new sanctions against representatives of the Russian Federation, targeting 225 captains of Russia's 'shadow fleet'. The United States also extended its sanctions against the aggressor in February.
Thus, the new EU sanctions are part of ongoing efforts to increase pressure on Russia amid the protracted conflict. The sanctions aim not only to restrict Russia's economic capabilities but also to demonstrate the unity of the international community in condemning the aggression. Given that the new restrictions are being introduced on the four-year anniversary of the war, their implementation could significantly influence the further development of events both in Ukraine and in international relations.
The synergy of sanctions from the EU and the US indicates continued pressure on Moscow with the goal of achieving stability in the region.
