EU Aims to Merge Ukraine’s Military into a European Defense Union, Says Kubilius.
Bringing Ukraine’s Army into the European Defense Union
According to UATV: The European Union is actively working to incorporate Ukraine’s armed forces into the European Defense Union. This was announced by EU Commissioner Andrius Kubilius during a roundtable held in Brussels on June 9, 2023. He described the move as essential for Europe’s security amid ongoing threats from Russia.
Kubilius stated that aligning Ukraine’s defense capabilities with those of Europe should be a top priority for the continent. He warned that if Russian President Vladimir Putin launches further aggression, EU nations could face a battle-hardened Russian military. This underscores the urgent need to strengthen Europe’s defensive posture, particularly through cooperation with Ukraine.
Funding Ukraine’s Defense
Additionally, Kubilius noted that EU member states are expected to spend 70 billion euros on Ukraine’s defense by 2026. This highlights the bloc’s commitment to investing in regional security and stability. He also expressed hope that Ukraine, along with the United Kingdom, Norway, possibly Turkey, and even Canada, could join EU member states in the newly formed European Defense Union.
These plans for integrating Ukraine’s military and making substantial financial commitments to its defense signal a rapidly deepening partnership between Ukraine and Europe in the face of modern security challenges. This initiative could significantly reshape the strategic landscape in the region, boosting the collective defense capabilities of EU countries and their allies.
As military threats from Russia intensify, such steps could become a crucial factor for stability and security across Europe.
