EU Cuts Hungary’s Access to Secret Data Over Fears of Leaks to Russia.
Hungary Blocked from Confidential EU Discussions
According to UATV: The European Union has moved to restrict Hungary’s participation in confidential talks, citing risks that sensitive information could end up in Moscow. The decision follows a warning from Gabrielius Landsbergis about the potential for Hungarian officials to pass data to Russia.
Hungarian Delegation Excluded from Key Talks
In 2023, ahead of the NATO summit in Vilnius, Hungary’s delegation was barred from discussions on sensitive matters. This step reflected growing unease among EU member states over Budapest’s ability to safeguard critical information.
Landsbergis stressed that 'the Hungarian side might relay information to Russia, and that he and his colleagues should limit information sharing accordingly.'
Meanwhile, the Hungarian government has denied reports that Russian intelligence staged a fake assassination attempt on Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The Washington Post had previously detailed a Russian plot to fabricate such an attack, a claim Budapest dismissed as 'propaganda.'
These developments underscore deepening concerns within the European Union about Hungary’s relationship with Russia and the broader implications for regional security. By limiting access to confidential data, the EU signals heightened alarm over potential Russian threats, which could strain political ties across the bloc. The situation also raises questions about Hungary’s commitment to European security and confidentiality standards.
