EU Pledges to Back Armenia Against Russian Coercion: Key Details.
European Union’s Support for Armenia
According to UATV: During a press briefing held in Brussels on June 1, the European Union announced its commitment to support Armenia in countering Russian pressure and interference in the country’s internal affairs. Anouar El-Anouni, spokesperson for the European Commission on foreign affairs, stated that Russia is attempting to cripple Armenia’s economy and influence the nation’s parliamentary elections. This marks a significant shift in the EU’s regional stance, as it directly addresses Moscow’s growing leverage in the South Caucasus.
'Armenia, as a sovereign, democratic, and independent state, has every right to choose its own path and partners.' — Anouar El-Anouni
This statement underscores the EU’s position on respecting Armenia’s sovereignty. El-Anouni added: 'We will continue to provide Armenia with support in countering such attempts at coercion.'
Rising Tensions in the Region
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy remarked that 'Russia is threatening Armenia far more openly than before.' His comments highlight the escalating situation in the region and the critical need for international backing to ensure stability in Armenia.
The EU’s backing of Armenia may signal a new phase in the foreign policy of member states, as they seek to strengthen their foothold in the region amid Russia’s expanding influence. Zelenskyy’s remarks further suggest that regional tensions could intensify, requiring the global community to prepare for challenges stemming from Moscow’s actions. This development could profoundly shape political and economic dynamics across the Caucasus.
