EU Intensifies Pressure on Orbán Over Blocked €90 Billion Aid Package for Ukraine.
Growing Strain on Hungary and the Push for Ukrainian Support
According to UATV: European leaders are ramping up their demands on Hungary to unblock a massive €90 billion loan intended for Ukraine. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has faced sharp criticism for holding up the funding. Many EU officials view Budapest’s stance as unacceptable, especially given the ongoing need to support Ukraine in its war with Russia.
During a recent European Council meeting, the blocked credit was a central topic. European Council President António Costa voiced strong backing for Ukraine, stressing that Kyiv should not be blamed for the delay. Meanwhile, Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker pointed out that Hungary could source oil from other EU member states, potentially reducing its reliance on Russian energy supplies.
Energy Supply Challenges
The situation is further complicated by the fact that the Druzhba pipeline has sustained 23 attacks from Russia, highlighting the critical need for stable energy deliveries to Ukraine and Europe. These developments are putting Hungary’s actions under greater scrutiny, and mounting criticism from other European nations may push Budapest to reconsider its blockade of the loan.
“We consider this simply unacceptable.” – Ulf Kristersson
As tensions between Hungary and the European Union continue to escalate, the financial lifeline for Ukraine hangs in the balance. The outcome could have significant consequences not only for Ukraine but also for Europe’s broader energy security. Observers expect the EU to keep increasing pressure on Hungary in the coming weeks, hoping for a shift in its position that would unlock the much-needed funds.
