EU Opens Diplomatic Channel with Russia While Preparing New Sanctions Package.
European Council President’s Statements
According to UATV: On June 22, 2023, European Council President António Costa addressed the need to establish a diplomatic channel for contacts with Russia, despite Moscow currently showing no willingness to engage in negotiations. He noted that, regrettably, the current situation does not allow for talks, as Russia has provided no signs of genuine readiness for dialogue. This move comes amid ongoing tensions over the war in Ukraine, where the EU has consistently backed Kyiv.
The EU’s Stance
Costa also confirmed that the European Union will extend its sanctions against Russia for another 12 months. This decision underscores the bloc’s commitment to supporting Ukraine and maintaining pressure on Moscow throughout the conflict. Furthermore, the EU is preparing its 21st package of economic measures, signaling its intention to continue active economic actions against Russia.
The president emphasized that the EU has no plans to act as a mediator in negotiations, as it firmly stands with Ukraine.
“We do not want to be mediators because we are on Ukraine’s side and support it,” he stated. These remarks highlight the EU’s strategy of continued backing for Ukraine while refraining from active dialogue with Russia until conditions for constructive discussions emerge.
Costa’s statements reinforce the EU’s position amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and its approach to Russia. By rejecting a mediator role, the bloc demonstrates strong political solidarity with Ukraine, which could shape future diplomatic efforts. The extension of sanctions and the development of new economic measures reflect Europe’s intent to sustain pressure on Moscow, potentially impacting Russia’s economic landscape and regional developments.
