NATO Urged by EU Commissioner to Merge Ukraine’s Military into European Defense Alliance.
A Call to Bolster Ukraine’s Role in Europe’s Security Framework
According to UATV: Andrius Kubilius, the European Commissioner for Defense, has called on NATO to take a leading role in shaping Europe’s security architecture and to back Ukraine’s inclusion in the European Defense Union. Speaking at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Vilnius, Kubilius stressed the critical need to weave Ukraine into the continent’s security system.
Kubilius highlighted that Ukraine fields one of the most capable armies in Europe—and possibly the world. He warned that if Russia were to attack the European Union, allied forces would face a battle-hardened Russian military. In light of this, the commissioner expressed concern and argued that treating the integration of Ukraine’s armed forces as a vital interest is essential for Europe’s safety. This perspective emerges amid ongoing debates about how to strengthen European defense without over-reliance on the United States.
'It would be hard to understand if we in Europe do not regard the integration of Ukraine’s military—the best in Europe and possibly globally—into our security system as a vital interest,' said Andrius Kubilius.
Kubilius also observed that 'the more Ukraine succeeds, the more nervous and desperate Putin becomes,' linking Ukraine’s battlefield gains directly to growing unease in the Kremlin.
Growing Momentum for Ukraine’s Integration
Kubilius’s remarks reflect a broader trend of increasing European support for Ukraine amid pressing security challenges. Successfully folding Ukraine into European defense structures could significantly boost the region’s military strength and help counter Russian threats. These developments also underscore the importance of international backing for Ukraine’s push toward European integration and long-term stability in the area.
