EU's €90 Billion Ukraine Aid Package Faces Hungarian Hurdle.
EU's Financial Support for Ukraine
According to UATV: The European Commission anticipates that Hungary and other member states will endorse a €90 billion aid package for Ukraine, a commitment originally made during the European Council summit in December. The formal documents to enact this substantial financial support were slated for approval on February 24th, the anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
However, Hungary has currently blocked the provision of this financial assistance. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that Budapest will not support the aid until the operation of the 'Druzhba' oil pipeline is restored. This demand has become the primary obstacle delaying the European Union's pledged financial support for Ukraine. This pipeline is a key route for Russian oil to Hungary, linking the aid to Budapest's energy interests.
Complications in Aid Delivery
Further complicating the situation, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has also issued an ultimatum to Ukraine, which could hinder the delivery of the promised funds. The atmosphere remains tense, and the next steps will depend on the progress of negotiations between EU member states and Ukraine.
"A unanimous political agreement was reached at the December European Council meeting to provide €90 billion in decisive support for Ukraine's budgetary and military needs over the next two years."
Balázs Orbán
The delays instigated by Hungary and Slovakia underscore the complex political negotiations within the European Union regarding support for Ukraine during the ongoing war. This situation highlights how the economic and political interests of individual member states can conflict with collective humanitarian commitments. Observers expect that the outcome of further talks will critically impact the speed of delivering this aid, which is vital for Ukraine's stability as it continues to defend itself.
