Europe Needs Security Guarantees from Ukraine, Says Estonia's Foreign Minister.
Estonian Foreign Minister's Statement
According to UATV: On April 2, 2023, Estonia's Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated that Europe requires security guarantees from Ukraine, citing the country's wartime experience. He stressed that integrating Ukraine into the EU and NATO would serve as a security guarantee for all of Europe. Tsahkna called for decisive European action in supporting Ukraine, warning that inaction would allow Russia to continue its aggression.
Tsahkna described Ukraine as the largest, most effective, and most battle-hardened military force in the region. He noted that discussions within NATO focus not only on providing security guarantees to Ukraine but also on the region's need for security guarantees from Ukraine.
“These 'gray zones' only give Putin a green light to continue his aggression against Europe,” Tsahkna added.
Stepping Up Efforts to Strengthen Security
The Estonian minister's remarks underscore the urgency of ramping up efforts to bolster European security by supporting Ukraine and integrating it into European structures.
Tsahkna's statement reflects growing unease among European nations about regional security amid Russia's ongoing aggression. Integrating Ukraine into the EU and NATO could be a pivotal step in strengthening collective security—important not just for Ukraine but for all European countries. This could also influence policy decisions in other nations considering bolstering their defense capabilities in response to Russian threats.
