Macron and Merz in Chisinau: why EU leaders support Moldova ahead of the elections.
According to FREEДOM:
Moldova's Independence Day
Today, August 27, Moldova celebrates its main state holiday - Independence Day. Since declaring sovereignty, the country has faced numerous difficulties, including social and economic problems and political instability. However, over the past decades, Moldova has gradually charted its path, placing Eurointegration at the center of its strategic priorities. The Independence Day celebration in Chisinau will be attended by European leaders.
Arrival of European Leaders
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk have arrived in Moldova to celebrate the 34th anniversary of the country's independence. Macron emphasized that Moldova's path to the EU is a choice "for peace and rights."
"Together we want to convey to the Moldovan people a message of respect, friendship, solidarity, and confidence in the future. [...] The path you have chosen of reforms, modernization, and courage must continue,” said the President of France.
Moldova's European Path
The President of Moldova emphasized that the country has no alternative to European development.
"Let me be clear: there is no alternative to Europe. [...] Putin's Russia is war and death,” stated President Maia Sandu of Moldova.
Mayors' Visit to Brussels
On August 25-26, ahead of the holiday, 27 mayors from Moldova visited Brussels to familiarize themselves with the work of European institutions and discuss opportunities for cooperation.
"As you move towards the EU, Europe will continue to support you in building a bright future for all Moldovans,” wrote EU Commissioner Marta Kos on social media X.
Threats from Within
Concerns are growing over the increasing influence of pro-Kremlin forces ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for September 28. European officials believe this could complicate the efforts of President Sandu's party to form a government.
"There is such a flood of propaganda from all sides [...] except for Eurointegration,” comments Moldovan politician Vitaly Marinutsa.
Support from Ukraine
European politicians emphasize the importance of maintaining Moldova's pro-European course, especially given that Ukraine and Moldova have been granted candidate status for EU membership. The head of the Ukrainian state noted that the countries of the region should unite their efforts to protect their peoples.
"The countries of our region are closely interconnected, and together we must protect our peoples, [...] we can ensure reliable security and a decent life for all our people," wrote the President of Ukraine.
Efforts for EU Membership
European leaders believe it is important to start the first stages of negotiations for EU membership this autumn.
"We will do everything possible to open the first stages of negotiations for EU accession this autumn,” stated German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The visit of European leaders to Chisinau aims to support Moldova on its path to EU membership and confirm that there is an alternative to Russia. As representatives of the ruling party in Germany note, this visit serves as an important link between Europe and the Moldovan people.
Reminder: President Maia Sandu stated that Russia plans "unprecedented interference" in the parliamentary elections to control Moldova. The elections will take place on September 28.
