Allen's statements and Ukraine's reaction
Allen appeared at the Moscow International Film Festival via video link on Sunday and spoke with the audience.
The director, a multiple Academy Award winner, expressed a positive opinion about Russian cinema and expressed a desire to make a film in Russia.
He noted:
“I have been to Moscow and St. Petersburg. I have always enjoyed Russian cinema.'
Allen appeared at the event hosted by Fyodor Bondarchuk, the son of the famous Sergey Bondarchuk, director of 'War and Peace'. Fyodor openly supports Putin's invasion of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded:
“Woody Allen's participation in the Moscow International Film Festival is shameful and an insult to the victims of Ukrainian actors and filmmakers who have been killed or injured by Russian war criminals.”
The Ministry also noted that Allen's participation in the festival, where supporters of Putin gather, demonstrates his contempt for the horrific crimes that Russia has been committing in Ukraine for over 11 years.

Woody Allen's words
Allen assured that he is not a supporter of Putin but believes that discussions about art should continue regardless of politics. He emphasized:
“When it comes to the conflict in Ukraine, I am convinced that Vladimir Putin is absolutely wrong.”
The director also stressed that abandoning his artistic views will not help in the current situation.
He was one of the main guests at the festival, alongside Serbian director Emir Kusturica and American actor Mark Dacascos.

It is worth noting that Allen's reputation has taken a significant hit in recent years due to allegations of sexual abuse by his adoptive daughter, Dylan Farrow.
