Getting Ready for the NATO Summit in Ankara

According to Espreso.tv: International affairs expert Yuriy Romanyuk, who leads the All-Ukrainian public organization 'Ukraine in NATO,' discusses the preparations for the NATO summit scheduled for July 7-8 in Ankara. He emphasizes that maintaining the Alliance's unity and trimming the summit's agenda are top priorities for all participants. Romanyuk stresses that ensuring NATO's cohesiveness is the single most important goal for everyone involved.

The summit officially kicks off on July 8, with a gala dinner taking place on the evening of July 7. Notably, no separate session of the Ukraine-NATO Council is planned during this gathering. Back in July, Bloomberg reported tensions among NATO member states over the wording of the joint communiqué. However, on June 27, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico confirmed that a major aid package for Ukraine is expected to be announced at the summit.

According to Romanyuk, 'on the 7th, basically, only Trump's arrival and the gala dinner are scheduled.' This suggests a restricted format for the summit's proceedings, which could limit discussions on critical issues.

Challenges at the Summit

As a result, summit participants will face significant challenges in preserving the Alliance's unity and addressing regional security matters.

The Ankara NATO summit is a pivotal event for international politics, as it will shape the Alliance's next steps in tackling security threats, particularly regarding the situation in Ukraine. The absence of a dedicated Ukraine-NATO Council session may point to difficulties in cooperation among member states, yet the promised aid announcement for Ukraine could send a positive signal to Kyiv and its allies.
